It's a methodical process that cross-checks Google's official data, professional SEO platforms, and AI to find what's holding your rankings back. Our SEO audit checklist covers five areas: technical, quality, popularity, international, and local. Here are the specific criteria we review in each one and the benchmarks we use to decide whether something is fine or needs work.

Every industrial company we audit starts from the same place: traffic that isn't growing, product pages nobody finds, and a sense that “something” is wrong on Google without knowing what. An SEO audit exists precisely to put a name to that “something.” Over dozens of projects with Spanish and European manufacturers and distributors, we've built our own SEO audit checklist: structured and repeatable. We're sharing it in full, holding nothing important back.

Step one of the SEO audit checklist: crawling, indexing, and performance

Before you touch content or links, you have to make sure Google can read the website. It's the least glamorous part of an SEO audit and, at the same time, where we find the most hidden problems. A healthy technical foundation is what lets everything else work.

Crawling and indexing: making sure Google reads what matters

The first step is to check that Google crawls and indexes exactly the URLs that matter to the business. It sounds obvious, but it's the number one cause of the SEO problems we find in manufacturing. Here we review the robots.txt (which paths are blocked and why), the XML sitemap (up to date and well segmented by content type), the noindex and canonical tags on every critical page, the crawl errors Google's official tools report, the click depth from the home page (strategic pages should be no more than 3 clicks away), and how much crawl budget is being spent on URLs with no value.

A typical industrial company has 15% to 30% of its URLs mis-tagged or eating up crawl budget without adding anything: pagination, filter parameters, legacy files. Finding and cleaning them up usually brings visible results in 2–3 months without publishing a single line of new content.

Core Web Vitals and the mobile experience

Google has been prioritizing user experience for years, and in 2026 Core Web Vitals are a real ranking factor. What's more, mobile performance is the version Google evaluates first, so that's where we measure. The thresholds we aim for: LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1, and INP under 200 milliseconds, all simulated on mobile over a 4G connection, the scenario that penalizes you if something's wrong.

Industrial websites with heavy catalogs (lots of images, long spec sheets) usually fail on LCP. The usual fixes are WebP images, lazy loading, removing render-blocking scripts, and a professional CDN. Done right, an industrial website can go from mediocre performance (60/100) to good (85+) in 4–6 weeks.

Server and response speed

Beyond Core Web Vitals, there are server factors that directly affect industrial SEO: response time, the ability to handle concurrent traffic, and cache configuration. A slow server costs you, especially when Googlebot comes to crawl thousands of catalog URLs. We check for TTFB under 600 ms, the ability to serve 50 to 100 simultaneous requests without degrading, a properly configured page cache, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 enabled, and an SSL certificate with no mixed-content errors.

Two classic problems in manufacturing: plugins piled up over the years that slow everything down, and cheap shared hosting that buckles as soon as Googlebot crawls in earnest. Moving to hosting sized for your real volume usually brings immediate, measurable improvements.

Quality and popularity: content and authority

Once the technical foundation is in order, the audit focuses on what really turns traffic into business: content quality and brand authority. This is the biggest difference between industrial websites that grow and those that stall. We review three pillars.

On-page SEO and content

On-page SEO is the unfinished business of 80% of the industrial websites we audit. It's not about stuffing keywords into titles; it's about building pages that answer exactly what the professional buyer is looking for. Page by page, we check the heading structure (a single H1, with H2-H4 in a clear hierarchy using semantic terms), titles and meta descriptions optimized for intent and CTR, in-depth content (at least 1,500–2,000 words on strategic pages), correct use of structured data (Product, Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList), well-designed internal linking, and alignment between search intent and the content delivered.

The most common mistake: product pages that copy the PDF catalog without adding anything, with no application context, no use cases, no comparisons. Rewriting those pages for SEO and conversion is one of the highest-return tasks per unit of effort.

E-E-A-T: the authority Google recognizes

E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust) is the framework Google uses to evaluate a website's credibility. In manufacturing, where decisions rest on technical trust, it's absolutely critical. We audit the real bylines on every article (with an author profile and documented experience, not generic names), the technical team's bios, mentions in trade media, the certifications and standards displayed on service pages, case studies with figures and verifiable testimonials, and the company's basic transparency (contact info, physical address, year founded, team).

A company with weak E-E-A-T ranks below competitors with the same technical content, simply because Google doesn't consider it trustworthy enough. Strengthening it usually takes 3 to 6 months of coordinated work between marketing and communications, but the effects are long-lasting.

Industrial link building: few links, but good ones

Link building in industrial B2B works the opposite way from B2C: it's not about piling up hundreds of cheap links but about earning very high-quality links from industry-specific sources. We review your current link profile (how many, from where, with what authority and anchor text), flag toxic links to disavow, look for untapped industry opportunities (associations, chambers of commerce, trade shows, technical media, partners, distributors), and benchmark against the profiles of your 3–5 main competitors to find the gaps.

A realistic benchmark: a well-ranked industrial company usually has 50 to 200 quality referring domains. Most of the websites we audit have fewer than 30, with a weak profile. A good industrial link building plan can triple that number in 12–18 months with a reasonable investment.

International SEO and local SEO

The areas above cover the bulk of any serious audit, but in manufacturing there are two dimensions you can't ignore: international SEO for exporting manufacturers and local SEO for distributors with a regional presence.

INT

International

hreflang with no duplication, a consistent subdomain or subdirectory structure, and content localized by country, not just translated.

DUP

The typical problem

An exporter with ES/EN/FR/DE usually carries hreflang conflicts and duplicate content across languages that block traffic for years.

LOC

Local

A complete Google Business Profile, consistent NAP, location landing pages, and active reviews. It generates leads as qualified as general organic traffic.

International: when you export in several languages

If your company exports or has a multilingual website, we review the correct implementation of hreflang with no duplication, a consistent subdomain or subdirectory structure, culturally adapted (not literal) translation, server speed in each market, and content localized by country. An industrial company with four languages (typical for exporters: ES, EN, FR, DE) usually has unresolved hreflang conflicts and duplicate content across versions. Fixing them can unlock traffic that's been blocked for years, without publishing anything new.

Local: when you have plants or distributors

If you have plants, distributors, or offices in several cities, we review a complete, verified Google Business Profile, consistent citations (NAP: name, address, phone) in industry directories, location-specific landing pages (“precision machining Vallès Occidental,” “CNC machinery distributor Andalusia”), and active reviews with professional replies. For companies with a regional presence, local SEO generates leads as qualified as general organic traffic.

What you take away from this article

A serious SEO audit is a methodical process that takes several weeks, not a PDF from a tool.

We cover five areas: technical, quality, popularity, international, and local.

The technical side (crawling, Core Web Vitals, server) delivers fast results without touching content.

In manufacturing, content and E-E-A-T are what turn traffic into business.

International and local SEO unlock opportunities many companies don't even know they have.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" open>
How long does a proper SEO audit take?

Two to four weeks of professional work: one week of data extraction and analysis, another of page-by-page review, another for the prioritized action plan, and a presentation session with your team. If someone promises you a complete audit in five days, it's usually superficial or automated.
</details><details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Is it worth it if my website is very small?

Yes, but we scale the scope to the size. What changes is the depth per area, not the list of areas. All five (technical, quality, popularity, international, local) apply to an industrial SMB just as much as to a multinational; only the volume changes.
</details><details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What tools are used in a professional SEO audit?

We combine AI platforms for content and semantic analysis, Google's official tools for crawl and real-world performance data, and professional SEO platforms for links, keywords, and competitive data. No single tool ever gives you the full picture.
</details><details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can we implement the recommendations ourselves?

Yes. A serious audit delivers a prioritized plan with specific actions and suggested owners. If you have a capable technical and marketing team, you can execute it in-house. If not, we can support you or take on the execution as an ongoing project.
</details><details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How often should you repeat it?

A full audit every 12–18 months is usually enough for a stable website. If you've done a migration or a major redesign, or your industry has changed significantly, a mini-audit at 3–6 months is worth it.
</details><details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How do you do an SEO audit if I don't know what's wrong?

With the technical foundation. Checking crawling, indexing, and Core Web Vitals usually uncovers problems that were holding everything else back and can be fixed quickly. From there: content, authority, and, where relevant, international and local.
</details>

CB

Carles BatistaTechnology journalist and SEO consultant at induSmart.
